Pilgrimage to Sacred Places: Kumano and Koya - Part II: The Divine Sanctuaries of Mount Koya’s Summit and Foothills

Wakayama Prefectural Museum
Finished
Mount Koya, the sacred site of Shingon esoteric Buddhism, serves as a Buddhist center and embodies a fusion of Shinto and Buddhist beliefs, with Niu Myojin, the deity of the land, enshrined. It is a sanctuary where Kukai (Kobo Daishi), the founder of the esoteric Shingon school of Buddhism, continues an eternal meditation. The exhibit will change between parts, first featuring 54 items and then 55 items, for a total of 108 items on display. The Part II exhibition presents the rich religious culture of the mountain and its foothills through the area's precious cultural assets.
