People Who Assemble Mosaic Tiles: Works of Misuzu Art and Mosaic Tile Art

Mosaic Tile Museum Tajimi
Finished
This exhibition focuses on Ken Sone, who passed away suddenly in 2020, and the "Misuzu Art Studio," which had been in existence since his grandfather's time, and introduces the artisans who were responsible for the pictorial expression of mosaic tiles.

The people of the area describe their work of creating paintings and patterns by combining mosaic tiles, which boast an abundance of colors, as "assembling art. Starting with a mural made of one-centimeter-square mosaic tiles installed at the U.S. Military Haneda Airport terminal in 1948, artists such as Taro Okamoto began to boost "art" production in the late 1950s. The development of glazed porcelain mosaic tiles in Kasahara (now Kasahara-cho, Tajimi City) and the establishment of a mass production system had a significant impact on the spread of mosaic tiles. This trend spread to familiar public buildings, public bathhouses, and shopping streets, and Tajimi also produced many artisans who assembled art, one of which was Misuzu Art Studio.

Today, the demand for large-scale mosaic tile paintings is declining, but pictorial expression using large wall surfaces is the essence of mosaic tiles, which can be combined with a wide variety of colors and shapes.
