Takayoshi Tsuchiya
Based on the idea of “exploring the city of Ota from new angles through the photo camera,” variously-themed “Ota Photo Sketch” exhibitions have previous showcased photographs taken in Ota by selected members of the general public and invited guest photographers. Each of these exhibitions was an occasion for rediscovering the appeal of Ota from multiple new perspectives.
This time, as the sixth of the Photo Sketch, we took a novel approach by inviting a contemporary artist Takayoshi Tsuchiya in place of a photographer, and held a workshop “Come tell us your story” along with a psychologist Masataka Murakubo. The exhibition consists of photos and words produced by the participants of the workshop. Together with them, past works of Tsuchiya are exhibited.
In the two-day workshop held in June, the participants worked on the theme “things that might be meaningless for others yet have a very special meaning for yourself (hereafter “it”)” proposed by Tsuchiya. They tried to grab “it” inside themselves, and created works of photos and words on their own.
When a person starts talking “If I’m correct, …” searching his or her memory, the story has something he or she cannot be sure, but on the other hand he or she has a sense that it is definitely correct. The expressions based on such personal reality of the total participants will come together as an exhibition that portrays the life activities of the people of Ota, and that may inspire each viewer to find in them new meanings for themselves.
