Ogai's Food

Mori Ogai Memorial Museum
Finished
This spring special exhibition focuses on how Ogai Mori (1862-1922), a great writer who lived during the Meiji and Taisho periods, lived his dietary life at a time when food culture was gradually changing due to modernization.

Although Ogai did not have a strong commitment to food, as a medical doctor he valued food and was interested in food culture out of a sense of intellectual pursuit. Looking at Ogai through the lens of food, we can see a cross-section of his personality, tastes, and accomplishments, including the way he cherished his family, his preference for a simple lifestyle, the wide-ranging personal interactions that can be glimpsed at banquets, the meals he attended as a government official, and works set in restaurants that he visited.
