Noriko Yanagisawa
Kido Press has been involved in the production of many copperplate prints, but I think it is safe to say that Noriko Yanagisawa's work is among the most technically challenging. This is because the various techniques used are mixed within a single copperplate, and it is extremely difficult to achieve the right expression for each technique at the same time.

The first characteristic is the depth of the etching line. The needle lines are deep and sharp, with a hard, metallic coldness. By further corroding those lines, the copper plate can be drilled far deeper and wider than drawn. This process produces lines unique to corroded copperplate prints that cannot be expressed with a brush or pencil. Printing these deep and wide lines, which form the basis of Yanagisawa's work, requires intense pressure on the press.

However, the exact opposite of this line expression exists on the same plate. It is mezzotint, which exists within the same plate, and which produces subtle tonal gradations by grinding the plate with countless joints. The softness and lightness peculiar to mezzotints are also present in the same printing plate. The soft, light-illuminated expression characteristic of mezzotint requires a delicate printing process. Strong press pressure is strictly prohibited for this technique. It may damage the plate. There is also aquatint, which requires a high level of skill on the part of the printer.

Another significant feature of recent years is that Yanagisawa has begun to hand-dye her own gampi paper and apply coloring and brushstrokes of maceration to the entire paper. Although the direct application of coloring, toning, and sometimes brushstrokes to the entire work may deny the plurality of prints in the strict sense of the word.

In this way, Noriko Yanagisawa is one of the few artists who have been constantly exploring and presenting new expressions in printmaking, and who has also been ambitiously working on other forms of expression, such as drawing.
