Noriko Okaku
Based in London and Kyoto, Noriko Okaku is an artist who explores the laws and transcendental forces that shape our world. She integrates theoretical frameworks such as philosophy, religious studies, quantum mechanics, and information thermodynamics with folklore, myths, legends, and occult narratives. Her works employ a combination of contemporary technologies, including collage, animation, VR, and AI.
This exhibition features an installation comprising cut-out human-shaped panels, microphones, two monitors, and AI-driven image generators. Viewers can interact with the installation by inputting their names into the microphone, prompting the AI to alter the "space" displayed on the monitors. Participants are encouraged to share the results on Instagram.
The piece is inspired by novelist William S. Burroughs' phrase "Language is a virus from outer space." The concept of external viewers inputting unique names that transform the "space" on the monitors parallels the process of a virus with unique genes entering a host and releasing newly formed cells. This metaphor extends to the idea that language possesses an influence beyond human control.
By focusing on the behavior of viruses, the installation draws parallels between the impact of language and digital information technology on humans, presenting Okaku's signature interdisciplinary perspective.
