New Bank of Japan Notes 2024 - Master Craft and Design

Bank of Japan Currency Museum
Finished
The Bank of Japan will issue new banknotes on July 3, 2024. Even as cashless transactions become more prevalent, the circulation of banknotes- Bank of Japan notes- continues to increase every year.

To ensure the secure use of banknotes, the new banknotes incorporate advanced anti-counterfeiting technologies and utilize more universally understandable designs. This exhibition introduces the new faces on the banknotes: Eiichi Shibusawa, Umeko Tsuda, and Shibasaburo Kitazato, along with the anti-counterfeiting technologies used in both the new and Edo-period banknotes.

The history of anti-counterfeiting technology for banknotes dates back to the Edo period when banknotes were issued across Japan. Techniques such as incorporating watermarks into the paper and printing tiny characters to prevent counterfeiting, used in Edo-period banknotes, have been carried over and developed in modern banknotes.
