New "Artists Today" Exhibition 2024: I Found Myself in You

"New 'Artists Today'" is a continuation of "Artists Today" which was held by the Yokohama Civic Art Gallery for 40 years since its opening in 1964. This exhibition explores contemporary art and its underlying themes from multiple perspectives, featuring the expressions of artists across various generations. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the exhibition and the subtitle for this milestone is "I Found Myself in You," introducing two young artists, Anna Scripcariu-Ochiai (born 1992) and Rintaro Fuse (born 1994).
The question of "Who am I?" is one that many have pondered at some point. At the same time, we are inherently intertwined with others, and encountering "you"—the other—can lead to new self-awareness.
Scripcariu-Ochiai, who has roots in both Japan and Romania, explores the theme of "the connection between land and people" through various media, including installations, photography, and video. Based on her experience of staying in Romania for about a year from November 2022, she has been presenting a series of works centered around photography titled "Hikari no Utsuwa" in various formats since 2023.
Fuse addresses the themes of "loneliness" and the recovery of "being two" in urban areas following the release of smartphones, through his poetry and texts, creating video works, websites, curations, and event planning.
Through their works, which unfold from the relationship between "me" and "you," this exhibition offers an opportunity to reflect on the unique individualities of the self and the other, as well as the society we form. Both artists are planning to present new works in line with the exhibition's theme.
