Natural History Studies by the Hosokawa Lords

Eisei-Bunko Museum
Finished
Japanese natural history was influenced by Chinese pharmacology and natural history (honzo-gaku). In the 18th century, feudal lords developed a keen interest in natural history hobbies. Shigekata Hosokawa (1720–85), the 6th lord of Kumamoto Domain, was a pioneer in this field. Hosokawa implemented reforms, established schools, and demonstrated a strong passion for animals, insects, and plants. Hosokawa's detailed natural history sketches reflect a deep curiosity and passion for nature. An exhibition in 1991 showcased Hosokawa's sketches, and now, after 33 years, a new exhibition features the lord's sketchbook capturing the real world as observed by the Hosokawa family lords.
