Marcel Duchamp
About a century ago, Marcel Duchamp attracted much attention through his pioneering approach to artworks that no one had ever seen before. Although the sensational aspects of his works are of interest to many due to the nature of the works and the artist’s peculiar behavior, his remaining works retain their significance to this day and have had a considerable influence on later artists. This exhibition attempts to re-examine the various mysteries and intentions that are left with the works.

The exhibition features artworks by Kanji Wakae including a painting interpreting The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (commonly known as The Large Glass) as a religious painting, and chessmen inspired by the figures, which are claimed to be the bachelors, appearing in The Large Glass. Prints by Marcel Duchamp, a replica of Boîte-en-valise (box in a suitcase), various materials are also on display.

Duchamp’s works are not just about visual surprise or novelty of expression, and also present philosophical, religious, and mathematical (scientific) aspects. We hope this exhibition will be an opportunity to reaffirm the multilayered meaning of his works and the profoundness of his questions raised with respect to art.
