Mode, the global event series introducing experimental music, audiovisual arts, and performing arts will return to Tokyo this June to showcase a new edition for 2024. Spread across multiple venues from June 1st through June 9th, "Mode 2024" will present a new series of programs featuring a lineup of unique artists from around the world, some based in Japan and Asia, propagating a wave of international artistic activity across Tokyo.
The second of two programs at Sogetsu Hall, located in the basement of Sogetsu Kaikan, leads with a headline performance from Bendik Giske. Performing for the first time in Japan the Norwegian saxophonist who has garnered global attention has collaborated with artists such as Beatrice Dillon, Buttechno, and Laurel Halo and also holds two nominations for the illustrious Norwegian Grammy Award. Japanese saxophonist Akira Sakata will compliment Bendik’s performance presenting his free jazz discipline and finally, Valentina Magaletti, a London-based avant-garde percussionist who has been making waves in the experimental music scene in recent years will also present her first solo performance in Japan.
Designed by renowned Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, Sogetsu Kaikan served as the base for the Sogetsu Art Center, which played a central role in avant-garde art in Japan from 1958 to 1971. The venue, featuring Isamu Noguchi's stone garden "Heaven" at the entrance, has a historical background supporting experimental expressions in Japan. Within this space, internationally acclaimed artists will gather to showcase their performances.
