Mitsumasa Anno
Mitsumasa Anno was born in 1926 in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture, and moved to Tokyo in 1950, where he worked as an art teacher while designing arts and crafts textbooks and book bindings. Since then, he has created many memorable works with his unique point of view filled with humor and rich expression that stirs the imagination.

His world of expression, which is as mysterious and fascinating to look at as it is to read, such as the detailed exotic landscapes depicted in pale watercolor and the trompe l'oeil alphabet, attracts people of all ages and has been highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad. Moreover, he has not limited himself to picture books, but has also demonstrated his versatility as a binding artist, designer, and essayist, and has produced many works that weave together illustrations and words with a playful and humorous spirit.

This exhibition introduces the entire picture book artist Mitsumasa Anno by displaying his representative original illustrations for picture books such as "Tabi no ehon" (Traveling Picture Books), as well as works and materials related to his various works from the beginning of his life to his later years.
