This is the first solo exhibition at a museum for Mio Shirai, who prolifically produces works while freely traversing various media. Approximately 30 years after the presentation of precious three-dimensional works from the early 1990s, the exhibition reveals the full picture of the unknown giant, focusing on the splendidly unfolding paintings from the 2000s, incorporating videos and objects. The refined form and profound reflections layered with complex meanings in Miho Shirai's works have maintained an astonishing quality for over 35 years.
From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, as the bubble economy came to an end, Shirai skillfully quoted and appropriated social customs and manners, using ready-made products such as furniture and barriers to create magnificent and bold installations. The use of glossy black and reflective hard materials is a characteristic feature, and photographs are also impressively incorporated.
Amid the Heisei era, from the mid-2000s onwards, bright colors such as pink and light blue emerged, soft materials like fabric and thread were used, and paintings began to play a central role. Images taken from alchemical illustrations and stories are interwoven with contemplation of the circulation of the universe and life.
In "Clearing in the Forest," valuable early works are reconstructed and displayed alongside the latest works. Please come and explore the labyrinth where things, spaces, and images are entangled, leading to the "clearing" that opens beyond.
