Artists

Matabei Iwasa
Matabei Iwasa (1578-1650) dominated the art world with his unique style, which blended Yamato-e and Chinese-style painting and had a great influence on later paintings. The gorgeous emaki (picture scrolls) that use the authentic text of Ko-joruri as a guidebook occupy an important position in Iwasa's painting career.

The "Joruri Monogatari Emaki" is a picture scroll depicting the love story between Ushiwaka, who goes to Oshu, and Joruri, the daughter of the chief of Yahagi Mikawa. This exhibition features all 12 scrolls of "Joruri Monogatari Emaki," the most colorful of all the scrolls attributed to Iwasa.
