Artists

Matazo Kayama et al.
This exhibition traces the diverse artistic journey of Masuzo Kayama (1927-2004), who made remarkable contributions as a leading figure in Japanese painting from the Showa to Heisei eras.

Amidst the challenging social circumstances following World War II, criticism was directed towards the pre-modern nature of the Japanese painting world, leading to the assertion of the "demise of Japanese painting." In this context, Kayama made his debut in the Creation Art Exhibition, aiming to create Japanese paintings rooted in universality. By incorporating Western painting techniques from artists like Lascaux cave paintings, Bruegel, Cubism, and Surrealism, he presented innovative works and garnered attention with his tendency to change his style approximately every decade. His contributions extended beyond Japanese painting, as he actively engaged in printmaking and collaborated with craftsmen to produce a variety of artwork.

This exhibition features over 20 works, including Kayama's early animal series, popular cat paintings, mountain landscapes influenced by his mentor Kyujin Yamamoto, traditional Japanese painting expressions of plum blossoms and cherry blossoms, and new ink paintings inspired by medieval Japanese and Northern Song Dynasty paintings. Additionally, visitors can explore Kayama's diverse activities, including collaborative works with craftsmen such as ceramics and kimonos.

In the interactive exhibition room, Kayama's paintings will be thoroughly explained alongside videos, while works by contemporaries such as Kaii Higashiyama and Ikuo Hirayama in Japanese painting, as well as oil paintings by Ryohei Kiso, with whom Kayama had a close relationship, will be introduced from the Shimose Collection. Visitors can also enjoy the Emile Galle flower vases displayed alongside spring flowers in the museum's garden.
