Kitakyushu, the "City of Manga," has produced a large number of manga artists. The historical background and cultural roots of Kitakyushu's manga culture reveal that manga artists and readers, as well as the artists themselves, have communicated closely with each other.

Cartoonists from newspaper companies concentrated in Moji and Kokura. Cartoonists in the advertising industry. Cartoonists who worked in the steel industry and wrote for company newsletters and union newspapers. The Kyushu Cartoonists Association, a major salon for cartoonists in Kitakyushu and Fukuoka... Manga artists gathered and honed their skills in a wide variety of communities and media, from mass media to mini-comics, including local magazines, town magazines, and coterie magazines.

This exhibition takes as its starting point the legendary manga newspaper "Manga Shin-Kyushu" (edited by Mukuro Matsumi), which was published in Kitakyushu in the immediate postwar period, and reveals the historical process by which the various "newspaper" media, large and small, nurtured Kitakyushu's manga culture. In addition, the exhibition will also present original illustrations by Hisashi Sekiya and Tsunezo Murotani, two of the biggest stars of Kitakyushu's newspaper manga, to give an overall picture of their work from the museum's collection. The Murotani works have recently been newly acquired and organized, and this exhibition will mark the unveiling of the collection.
