Manabu Kanai
In 2015, Manabu Kanai obtained his doctoral degree from the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School with his thesis "On Making Art: Descriptive Forms of the World—Its Transductive Generation." In this thesis, he responded to the question of "what is art" by asserting that it is not merely the expression through existing art forms such as painting and sculpture but rather the act of inventing new artistic forms as new languages for perceiving the world.

Furthermore, drawing upon Clement Greenberg's concept of medium specificity and Gilbert Simondon's theory of individuation, he described the "new artistic forms" as a transductive generative logic that bridges and mediates the specificities of multiple different media.

In 2021 and 2022, aiming to evolve his artistic forms into a new stage incorporating temporality, Kanai conducted research in New York, particularly focusing on the transition from Minimalism to Post-Minimalism, especially the works of Frank Stella, with the support of the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Overseas Study Program for Upcoming Artists.

"Turning Midnight Inside Out, Stitching It onto the Back of Noon" is Kanai's first exhibition held after his training in New York.
