This will be Mai Endo's first solo exhibition at the TAV Gallery in eight years since her performance "I am Pregnant with God's Child" in 2015. This exhibition will introduce the current location of Mai Endo, who uses her own body to playfully shake social norms, centering on a newly shot video work set on the rooftop of House Nishiazabu, a multi-tenant building where TAV Gallery is located.
The rooftop is an open place with a good view, but at the same time, it is also a closed place in the sense of a dead end. From the perspective of a space that is at once liberating and clandestine, in other words, both public and private, the artist will present works that explore the boundaries between intimacy and obscenity.
Endo will collaborate again with Ami Jung, who appeared as a Korean-speaking comic actor in "Tamagomaru" (2020), part of the "Snake-Like" series. Aerial photography using a drone will be used to frame the rooftop itself, cutting the actors out of the landscape and laying out the exhibition space from the gallery to the city as a whole.
Endo will also participate in the National Museum of Western Art's exhibition "Can this room be a sleeping room for future artists? at the National Museum of Western Art. After exhibiting in "MOT Annual 2016 Kiseino Seiki" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and "Feminisms" at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2021), new questions should be raised about the physicality of women in public space.
This solo exhibition, which is also a transitional period leading up to this, will be an important opportunity to see a different kind of expression that cannot be seen in art museums.
