Living Creatures Encyclopedia - Discover Them in Ukiyo-e!

Itsuo Art Museum
Finished
A thorough investigation of "Creatures" in Ukiyo-e depictions of the Kabuki world!

From horses used as transportation and galloping boars to talented monkeys, and adorable dogs, cats, birds, and insects, this exhibition will feature animals that people from the Edo to Meiji periods commonly encountered in their daily lives. But that’s not all. There are also beautiful women who, despite their human appearances, are foxes or herons. Enormous hawks and toads conjured by sorcery, dragons climbing waterfalls, and other mythical beings make their appearances.

Furthermore, there are creatures in the flashy costumes and backgrounds as well. From those that are easily recognizable to those that make you say, "Wait, where is it?" let's uncover the cute, mysterious, and whimsical creatures!
