Monet: The Late Waterscape

National Museum Of Western Art, Tokyo
Starts in 2 days

Artists

Claude Monet
Claude Monet (1840-1926), one of the leading painters of the Impressionist movement, captured the fleeting moments of light and the changing moods of nature on canvas with his keen eye. However, as he grew older, his art became more abstract and introspective.

Monet's later years were marked by numerous hardships, including the deaths of beloved family members, eye disease, and the turmoil of World War I. Amid these challenges, the primary source of his creative inspiration became the water lily pond in the garden of his home in Giverny. The surface of this pond reflected the surrounding trees, sky, and light as one cohesive image. The idea of covering the walls of a room with large-scale canvases depicting this subject, known as his "grand decorations," occupied Monet's thoughts until the end of his life.

At the heart of this exhibition are the numerous large-scale "Water Lilies" paintings created during this period of trial and error. From the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, approximately 50 significant works, many of which are being shown in Japan for the first time, are on display. Additionally, works from collections across Japan are included, presenting the pinnacle of Monet's late artistry. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see the largest collection of "Water Lilies" assembled in Japan.
