Artists

Kota Taniuchi
Kota Taniuchi made an impressive debut in 1971, at the age of 22, when his third picture book "Natsu no Asa" won the Graphic Prize at the Bologna International Children's Book Fair, making him the first Japanese artist to win the prize. His picture books, with their stripped-down pictures and poetic language, were greeted with surprise both in Japan and in Europe. Taniuchi's picture books, which freely move between the worlds of reality and fantasy, continue to fascinate viewers to this day.

Taniuchi, who loved the seasonal nature and cityscapes of Germany and France, moved with her family to Normandy at the age of 35, where she set up a studio and painted many oil paintings.

This exhibition presents an overview of Taniuchi's painting career by displaying original illustrations for picture books, magazine covers, and tableaus, along with numerous other materials.
