Kojindani Discovery! Yayoi Culture in Izumo

Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo
Finished
In the summer of 1984, 358 bronze swords were discovered at the Kojindani site (Hikawa-cho, Izumo City), followed by the excavation of 6 bronze bells and 16 bronze spears the following year. The Kojindani site attracted significant attention as the largest deposit of bronze artifacts in Japan. This discovery dramatically altered the previous image of ancient Izumo portrayed through myths and ancient history.

This special exhibition, marking the 40th anniversary of the Kojindani discovery, focuses on the Yayoi culture of Izumo based on the latest research findings. First, it will elucidate the actual lifestyle of Yayoi people through recent excavation results in Shimane Prefecture, including aspects such as paddy agriculture, hunting, fishing, dwellings, and craftsmanship. Secondly, it will highlight the intensification of jade production in Izumo, extensive exchanges with distant regions like Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula, and evidence indicating conflicts during that period. Additionally, the exhibition will present materials related to the production and use of bronze artifacts adopted by Yayoi people as ceremonial tools, delving into the mysteries of the massive bronze deposits in Izumo.
