Kobo Abe──The Axis of 21st Century Literature

Kanagawa Museum of Modern Literature
Finished

Artists

Kobo Abe et al.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Kobo Abe's birth (1924–1993). The creative journey began with poetry during student years and evolved into novels such as "The Wall" and "The Woman in the Dunes," along with plays like "Friends," photography, and integrated arts through the theater group, Kobo Abe Studio. Unique works explore the disorientation of self when familiar names, bodies, and places are compromised, portraying a world where established norms suddenly collapse. These themes continue to resonate with readers worldwide. This exhibition features approximately 500 items, including many on public display for the first time, aiming to illuminate the comprehensive legacy of Kobo Abe as a trailblazer of the era while reexamining the significance of these themes in the 21st century.
