Artists

Ken Wakayama
This is the first retrospective exhibition to explore the diverse creative activities of Ken Wakayama (1930-2015), creator of "Koguma-chan Ehon."

Born in Gifu City in 1930, Wakayama first encountered drawings for children soon after the war and developed a strong admiration for them. After working as a graphic designer, he moved to Tokyo and created his first picture book, "Kitsune-yama no Yomeiri" (1968), which was written and illustrated by Wakayama, and was a warning against modern society, expressed in light colors and fantastic expressions.

Wakayama's best-known work, the "Koguma-chan Ehon" series, was created in 1970 as a group production based on his desire to "create picture books that Japanese children would encounter for the first time." Since then, 15 titles have been produced, and the series has been a major long-seller for over half a century. This exhibition introduces the process of their creation.

The exhibition will present the rich world of Wakayama's work to all generations through approximately 230 items, including the "Ghosts of Doron Doron" series with its unique humor, illustrations for picture books and poetry collections based on folk tales, illustrations for magazine covers, and materials on picture book production.
