This exhibition will feature a selection from the well-received works at Ginza Graphic Gallery (ggg) in the fall of 2021.
Kaoru Kasai has been remarkably active in many fields, not only in advertising such as "Suntory Oolong Tea" and "United Arrows," but also in packaging, CI, signage planning, novel and poetry book bindings, film and theater-related graphics, and video production.
In this exhibition, Kasai will present several recent works under the theme of “nostalgia.” Nostalgia or a "longing for home," is also the title of an Andre Tarkovsky movie, but Kasai describes it as "an interest in things that have no meaning, things that are not understood. It is something that lies at the depth of it.” And it comes from manual work, he said. Using a ruler, polishing ink, squeezing out paint, sharpening pencils, etc., all produce nostalgic smells and sounds that converge. It evokes the ancient primitive senses that reside in Kasai's body. For Kasai, "nostalgia" is the "joy of editing the fragments of his creation" that comes out through his own hands (the universe).
Kasai's works contain many hints for overcoming the uncertain, uncertain, and awkward digital age. His works are filled with "humor" and "pathos," "intelligence" and "innocence," etc., which modern society is losing.
