Artists

Kanji Hasegawa
While a student of sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts, Kanji Hasegawa developed an interest in Buddhism, as it is a part of his familiarity with punk rock culture and the process of creating modern art that incorporates concepts into figurative forms. With works that reflect his philosophy and way of life, Hasegawa is an artist who has attracted attention both in Japan and abroad, including participation in a group exhibition at the Kyocera Museum of Art in Kyoto.

Hasegawa creates harmony in a single world quite naturally by crossing different concepts and time frames associated with shapes and materials. He has also combined plants of indigenous origin, such as hemp, mustard, roses, lotus, and exotic weeds, with various vases he creates. The plants, such as the exquisite petals and veins of leaves reproduced in wood carvings, are covered with pseudo-urushi lacquer and gold leaf, then sooted with Japanese candles, condensing the passage of time as Buddhist ritual utensils placed in temples. These supernatural wood carvings, combined with hand-twisted ceramic vases embodying modernity and universality, and with vases remade from antique objects to reposition them in their historical context, demonstrate Hasegawa's masterful perspective. In this exhibition, Hasegawa uses dying plants as a motif for the first time.
