When one thinks of diagnosis, it typically conjures images of health check-ups aimed at identifying illnesses through examinations of organs like the heart, lungs, stomach, and blood. Urban diagnosis similarly involves quantitatively grasping aspects such as demographic composition, economic strength, distribution of public facilities, and transportation networks to measure urban vitality.

However, the Kanazawa Diagnosis led by Yoshiro Taniguchi and others diverged from the conventional urban diagnostics focused on urban strength. Instead, it sought to inquire into the character of the city, encompassing its uniqueness, style, and landscape. If we were to draw an analogy to human diagnosis, it would correspond to aspects of an individual's values, aesthetic sensibility, and emotions.

The Kanazawa Diagnosis occurred during a period when Japan as a whole was recovering from the ravages of war, endeavoring to rebuild its economy and modern cities. At that time, Kanazawa grappled with ambivalence between preserving its historical activities dating back to the Edo period, untouched by war-related destruction, and the sense of lag in catching up with modernization and development.

This exhibition explores how the Kanazawa Diagnosis emerged and the role it has played. We aim to retrospect on how Kanazawa has defined its direction in urban development through this process.
