Josef Albers
Josef Albers (1888-1976) was a painter, designer, and art teacher. Born in Germany, he studied at the Bauhaus School of Art and Design and later became a teacher and basic educator. When the school closed, he moved to the United States and worked at Black Mountain College and Yale University. He trained some of the most important American artists of the postwar era.

Albers stated that the purpose of his classes was to "open their eyes. He did not just teach knowledge; he gave students assignments and encouraged them to think with their hands. He encouraged students to discover the possibilities of color and materials by exploring the answers. Albers himself continued to explore throughout his life. The result is an astonishingly diverse body of work, ranging from the glass paintings of his Bauhaus period to furniture and tableware designs, to his painting series, "Hymn to the Square."

This exhibition introduces Albers' work along with works by his students and photographs and videos of his classes. This is the first retrospective exhibition of Albers' work in Japan, which will explore Albers from both sides, as a creator and a teacher.
