Johannes Vermeer and the Masters of the Golden Age of Dutch Painting

The Miyagi Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Johannes Vermeer, Jacob van Ruisdael, Rembrandt van Rijn, Gabriel Metsu et al.
Based on the collection of the Elector of Saxony, the National Gallery of Classical Paintings in Dresden boasts one of the finest collections in Europe. One of its greatest treasures, Johannes Vermeer's "Woman Reading a Letter at a Window," is known as an early masterpiece that established a unique style, depicting a woman standing by a lighted window. A recent major restoration project has revealed a painting of Cupid on the background wall, which had been painted over after the artist's death. Of the 30 or so works by Vermeer said to be in existence, this is one of the most remarkable.

In addition to this work, which has just been restored to its original state, the exhibition will feature approximately 70 works by Rembrandt, Mettu, van Rijsdael, and other leading 17th century painters from the museum's extensive collection of Dutch paintings. This is the first exhibition of Vermeer's work in Miyagi in 11 years.
