Japanese Tile - A Century of Beauty and Utility

Mosaic Tile Museum Tajimi
Finished
This exhibition is a joint project of Inax Live Museum, Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum, and Tajimi City Mosaic Tile Museum, and is a traveling exhibition that traces the 100-year history of “tile" in Japan.

On April 12, 1922, tile industry representatives from all over Japan gathered in Tokyo and passed a resolution to unify the term "tile" to refer to the thin sheet of pottery that covers the surface of buildings. The background to the more than 25 different names under which "architectural decoration" had been referred to until then was the fact that the practice of covering buildings with pottery had spread to Japan in a variety of forms, reflecting cultures from around the world and with regional characteristics. Japan has adopted this type of pottery with its interpretation and has created tile that is distinctly Japanese. The "unification of names" is not simply a matter of narrowing down the names, but represents a time of change in which the contours of Japanese tile were defined, standardized, and distributed as an industrial product.

Behind the transformation was certainly a change in awareness of public health. However, the transition of tiles cannot be described only in terms of practicality and functionality, but also in terms of the Japanese people's attachment to pottery and the mirroring of the culture and art of the time.
