Japanese Painting☆Zoo

Akino Fuku Museum
Finished
Animals, which have always been close to humans, have fascinated people from ancient times to the present. Artists are no exception. Historically, animals have been anthropomorphized, depicted as incarnations of gods, symbols of fertility, or as beloved motifs in bird-and-flower paintings, taking on a variety of roles in art. These depictions range from simple, naive expressions to detailed, realistic portrayals, reflecting the diverse ways artists have viewed and represented animals.

In this exhibition, 20 contemporary Japanese painters focus on animals, showcasing works that capture their unique observations. From familiar pets like dogs, cats, and birds to popular zoo animals such as monkeys, tigers, and elephants, a wide array of creatures will be gathered at the museum. The precise depictions of fur, expressions, and gestures will make the animals feel vividly present. Whether showing the charming demeanor of animals or their powerful presence in fantastical landscapes, these works reveal the artists' deep respect and interest in their subjects. The exhibition includes works such as Akino Fuku's beloved paintings "Cat" and "Swamp," which depicts a water buffalo observed in India. Experience the brilliance of animal life as expressed uniquely through Japanese painting.
