Oil painting occupies an important place in the history of Japanese modern and contemporary art. Among the artists associated with Wakayama who form the core of the museum's collection are Itoko Jinnaka, who was one of the first Western-style painters in Japan; sculptor Ryumon Yasuda, who started from oil paintings; and Eitaro Ishigaki, Kisai Kawaguchi, and Masanari Murai, all of whom chose oil painting as their medium of expression and continued to paint throughout their lives.

This exhibition consists of approximately 100 works from the museum's collection.
