Isson Tanaka "Light and Soul"

Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
Until Dec 1

Artists

Isson Tanaka
Painter Isson Tanaka (1908-1977) dedicated his life to the pursuit of his art. This exhibition is a major retrospective that introduces his entire body of work, from his childhood, hailed as a prodigy, to his final works painted on the island of Amami-Oshima, where he spent his last days.

Throughout his life, Tanaka devoted himself wholeheartedly to "painting," untouched by worldly success. His life can be described as a "trajectory of unwavering passion." His paintings, brimming with clear light and centered on nature, are the crystallization of that passion. Within their quiet and serene atmosphere, it seems as if the eternal glow of his soul resides, never fading.

This exhibition, encompassing works from the Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum in Amami, and his representative piece, is a definitive collection. With a composition that includes numerous materials discovered in recent years, it aims to delve into the essence of this extraordinary painter and provide an opportunity to touch upon the depth of art as a "source of sustenance."
