Isamu Wakabayashi
Isamu Wakabayashi (1936-2003) was a leading figure in postwar Japanese sculpture with his thought-provoking works that explore the relationship between the artist and the world around him. Although at first glance his works appear taciturn and unemotional in form, they capture universal phenomena such as nature, distance, time, space, surfaces, and boundaries

In this exhibition, Wakabayashi's "Possession, Atmosphere, Vibration - Outskirts of the Forest" (1981-84), which includes the "Iron Room," a sculpture made from a part of his studio on campus during his tenure at Musashino Art University, will be exhibited again for the first time in about 30 years. This is an extremely important work in that Wakabayashi created a "room" in which he could sense or possess a space, and by concretely indicating the boundaries and scope of the room, he deepened his contemplation of the nature around him and expanded his view of sculpture.

In addition to "Possession, Atmosphere, Vibration - Outskirts of the Forest,” all 10 pieces of "Daisy I" A-J" (1993) will be presented in one continuous space. The juxtaposition of these two works, which were born from his observation and study of plants and nature, allows a revisiting of the aspects of nature and landscape that were at the core of Wakabayashi's sculpture from the middle to the end of his career, and to consider how he perceived the world and how he transformed the concepts he discovered there into sculpture.

In addition, as a measure of the distance between himself and the world, Wakabayashi has used "Vibration Scale" I-IV (1979), a concept that has been an integral part of his sculpture since the 1970s, "e First White Core" I-III (1992) and "Sulphur" series (1990), which use sulfur, an important material for him since the late 1980s. The exhibition will also feature approximately 100 drawings, maquettes, small works, and other materials, which will provide visitors with a glimpse into the artist's vast contemplations, exploring the traces of Wakabayashi's inherent thoughts in lines, words, and images.
