Isaac Julien
Isaac Julien is a leading figure in a movement of British filmmakers who use video as a means of expressing social activism. Created through collaboration with major artists in the Chinese-speaking world, "Ten Thousand Waves" (2010) is a massive video installation paying homage to Chinese culture. It launches a polyphony of actors, locations, and eras, intertwining in a tribute to Chinese culture. The project originated in response to the tragic Morecambe Bay cockling disaster in 2004, where 23 illegal Chinese immigrant workers lost their lives in a tidal accident in the northern part of the UK. This masterpiece, addressing forced migration and immigration issues at the intersection of calligraphy, cinema, and various myths, will be presented in Japan for the first time as part of the "Hors-les-murs (Beyond the Walls)" program from the Fondation Louis Vuitton's collection.
