Inami Sculpture

Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum
Finished
Inami in Nanto, Toyama, is one of the leading woodcarving towns in Japan. Numerous wood carvers have their workshops along Yokaichi Street, which runs through the center of the town, and the sound of their chisels echoes through the elegant cobblestone streets.

The wood carvers who have carried on the 260-year tradition of “Inami Sculpture" originated with the rebuilding of Zuisenji Temple in 1763, and have continued to create sculptures for temples, shrines, and festival floats in the local area and the surrounding region, as well as for Nikko Toshogu, Higashi Honganji in Kyoto, and Tsukiji Honganji in Tokyo, which are famous for their architecture. In recent years, the sculptors also worked on the Honmaru Palace of Nagoya Castle, which was restored in 2018.

The exhibition will feature temple carvings with bold, deep carvings and concentrated advanced wood carving techniques, exquisite Hikiyama carvings adorning gorgeous festival floats, and delicate and graceful carved transoms that were greatly developed as transoms for residences after the Meiji period (1868-1912). The exhibition also introduces the production process using more than 200 chisels and carving knives with actual tools, preliminary drawings, and videos.

The wood carvings, which vividly depict "stories" of lions, dragons, various animals and plants, and scenic spots, are still used to decorate architecture and people's daily lives in various regions of Japan.
