Ayano Yokoyama
Premiered in 2022, YU-KEI is a dance work that radiates a rare energy, born from the collaboration between choreographer Yokoyama Ayano, whose work combines urban and folk sensibilities, and the rock band SuiseiNoboAz, who composed an entirely original score for the piece. Yokoyama reexamines the mentality and physicality behind Japanese customs and folk performing arts related to honoring the dead and praying for abundant harvests. She blends these traditional Japanese bodily expressions with contemporary dance techniques, such as street and modern dance. Performed live to the soul-stirring music of SuiseiNoboAz, the piece takes the ancient, simple practices of singing and dancing with invisible forces and wishes, and connects it to the modern theater. When dance and music, the fundamental acts of expression, are shared with the enduring souls of people passed down through generations, they evoke a nostalgic vision of the future.
