Hosokawa Collection - Toshizo Hijikata Archives x Higo Kumamoto Domain

Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
Born on May 5, 1835, in Ishida Village, Tama District, Musashi Province (present-day Ishida, Hino City, Tokyo), Toshizo Hijikata left his birthplace at the age of 11 and gained experience working in Edo. While working as a medicine peddler, he also honed his skills in the Tenjin Shinyo-ryu. It was through this martial art that he encountered Isami Kondo, who would later become the fourth head of the school.

In 1863 (Bunkyu 3), during the shogun Yoshinobu Tokugawa's journey to Kyoto, the shogunate recruited those skilled in swordsmanship. Hijikata, along with Kondo and comrades from the Shieikan Dojo, went to Edo. Subsequently, they formed the political group "Shinsengumi" based on the Roshigumi, responsible for security in and around Kyoto. He particularly gained fame for his achievements in the "Ikedaya Incident."

In the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in the first year of Meiji (1868), Hijikata led the troops in place of the injured Kondo. After their defeat and retreat to the east, he joined forces with the shogunate's main force. Engaging in battles in Utsunomiya and Aizu, he consulted with shogunate retainer Shinsaku Takasugi in Sendai, crossed to Ezo (Hokkaido), and entered the Goryokaku Fortress. Here, Hijikata took on the weighty position of Deputy Military Magistrate in the provisional Ezo government, engaging in fierce battles against the new government forces. On May 11, 1869, while commanding various troops on horseback, he was struck by a stray bullet, bringing an end to his life at the age of 35.

This exhibition focuses on the collection of the Toshizo Hijikata Archives, showcasing the tumultuous period of the late Edo and Meiji Restoration that "Vice Commander of the Shinsengumi, Toshizo Hijikata," traversed. Additionally, in conjunction with this event, historical documents related to the Shinsengumi from the Higo Kumamoto Domain, housed in the Eigashira Bunko, will be displayed.
