Hope 2024 - 50 Years of Capturing Hope

Shibuya Hikarie 8/ Cube 1, 2, 3

The Japan College of Photography and Arts commemorates the inauguration of photographer Herbie Yamaguchi as its principal with a special photography exhibition titled "Hope 2024 - 50 Years of Capturing Hope." The exhibition will commence on Tuesday, June 25th, and spans two venues: Shibuya Hikarie's "8/Cube" and the 8th-floor "Wall Gallery" of the Japan College of Photography and Arts, reflecting on Yamaguchi's entire career. The exhibition's arrangement is curated by Manabu Torihara, the head lecturer of the Japan College of Photography and Arts and a photography critic.

At Shibuya Hikarie's "8/CUBE," the exhibition will cover Yamaguchi's career from his early photobook "1970, Dreams of a 20-Year-Old" to his time living in London, and includes his latest works, including the last photographs taken with the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, across three distinct spaces. Additionally, Yamaguchi's original cameras and contact sheets used during his early career will also be on display, offering a tactile sense of the artist's "presence" through the tools he handled directly during the production process.

At the "Wall Gallery" venue of the Japan College of Photography and Arts (located in Sakuragaoka-cho, Shibuya Ward), a reconstitution of the beloved masterpiece "17 Daikanyama Street," cherished by numerous fans, will be exhibited.

Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Yamaguchi has continued to capture the tenderness and modest hopes of the world. This exhibition reflects on his footsteps while sending encouragement to young people living in uncertain times through photography. A talk show related to the exhibition is scheduled for Friday, June 28th.
