Hokusai and Hiroshige: A Challenge to the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji from the Edo-Tokyo Museum Collection

Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hokusai Katsushika, Hiroshige Utagawa
The masters of ukiyo-e landscape painting, Hokusai Katsushika (1760–1849) and Hiroshige Utagawa (1797–1858). Hokusai, known for his bold compositions, and Hiroshige, renowned for his lyrical depictions, stood unparalleled in their artistry. How did these two create their masterpieces? Hokusai, throughout his 70-year career, engaged in diverse artistic activities, culminating in his "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji." On the other hand, at the time of this work's publication, Hiroshige, still a relatively unknown artist without any major hits, forged his own artistic path in a direction distinct from Hokusai's, as seen in his "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido."

This exhibition, showcasing 213 pieces from the collection of the Edo-Tokyo Museum, including all 46 prints from Hokusai's "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" and masterpieces of Hiroshige's landscape paintings such as "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" and "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," traces the challenges faced by these two artists.
