Historic Cameras of Japan - 120 Years of Technological Change

JCII Camera Museum
Finished
This year marks the 120th anniversary of the first mass-produced Japanese camera for amateurs, the "Cherry Hand Held Camera," which was launched in 1903. The "Cherry Camera" is a symbol of the emergence of the camera industry in Japan, and is the first camera selected by the Japan Camera Foundation as one of the “historic cameras of Japan."

The "Historic Cameras of Japan" project was launched in November 1969 to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Japan Camera Inspection Association (now the Japan Camera Industry Institute, JCII), which at the time was responsible for the inspection of export cameras.

The JCII's Historic Camera Screening Committee, consisting of neutral experts and academics, selected and collected domestically produced cameras that are historically significant, such as those that were either "Japan's first attempts at a technologically significant product" or "particularly popular in the market" to preserve the history of Japan's camera development.

Since the opening of the JCII Camera Museum in 1989, 898 cameras have been selected for permanent display as the core of the collection, and by 2022, many of them will be housed in the museum.

The Japanese camera industry started by imitating Western products, and through the defeat in World War II, reconstruction, and rapid economic growth, Japan became the world's camera superpower, and in recent years has contributed to the spread and development of digital cameras.

The “historic Cameras of Japan" selected during this period are the only valuable collection in the world that systematically covers the history of camera technology development in Japan with documentation.

This special exhibition will display the “historic Japanese cameras" selected and collected so far, and introduce what the development of camera technology in Japan has brought and the achievements it has made in the history of cameras and photography.
