Artists

Hiroshige Utagawa, Kuniyoshi Utagawa
The leading faction that propelled ukiyo-e during the late Edo period was the Utagawa school. Among them, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi Utagawa were prominent artists who captivated many with their wide range of ukiyo-e genres. Both were born in Edo in the 9th year of Kansei (1797), living through the same era as ukiyo-e artists. Hiroshige studied under Toyohiro Utagawa, while Kuniyoshi learned from Toyokuni Utagawa, each integrating their personalities and ideas into their ukiyo-e creations. Examining their ukiyo-e produced during the same period and in the same location reveals both differences and commonalities in their landscape prints, warrior prints, and caricatures.
