Hiroshi Sugimoto
Hiroshi Sugimoto once compared his photographic technique, which is the starting point of his artistic activities, to honkadori, the traditional technique of waka poetry, and developed his "honkadori theory.” In this theory, Sugimoto states that the tradition of Japanese culture has been nurtured by honkadori, or the spirit of an older generation, by inheriting the sensibility and spirit of an older age and adding new sensibility to it. Furthermore, Sugimoto seeks out the original poetry of cultures not only in Japan but around the world, and attempts to capture them in his own creations as well.

In this exhibition, Sugimoto attempts to further develop his "honkadori theory," which is not limited to photographic techniques, as he expands his field of expression. In this exhibition, Sugimoto will construct a new world of honkadori, incorporating themes that he has long pursued, such as the nature of time, human perception, and the origin of consciousness, and adding his own interpretation with references to Sen no Rikyu's "Mitate" and Marcel Duchamp's "Readymade".

In order to express this new style of honkadori, the exhibition will include the "Amanohashidate", a photographic work on folding screen, which will be exhibited for the first time, and the "Miho Matsubara" (owned by Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art), formerly owned by the Yugawa Art Museum, which inspired it, and the "Goshodai, the gilt bronze Kasuga Shika" (owned by Hosomi Art Museum), which has a connection with Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and the "Kasuga Shika Statue", a work that uses this as its motif, and which is also exhibited for the first time at the exhibition.

In addition to Sugimoto's representative works such as "Red and White Plum Blossoms under the Moon" based on Korin Ogata's "Red and White Plum Blossoms" and his large-format photographs, which have become synonymous with his work, there will also be a "Himeji Castle", which is a folding screen based on a photograph of Himeji Castle, and "Seated Shonin" based on the "Seated Shonin" owned by Enkyuji Temple. Through these new works inspired by Himeji's cultural assets, the concept of honkadori, which has always existed at the bottom of Sugimoto's works, will be unraveled.
