Hiroko Komatsu is known for her overwhelming approach to exhibiting a vast amount of photographs, for example, by spreading rolls of paper from the ceiling to the floor or presenting them while still rolled up, including invisibility. However, her exhibition "Channeled Drawing" takes a different turn, consisting of minimally framed black and white works.
"Channeled Drawing" is a series that pairs paper treated with frottage (a technique of rubbing paper on a surface with variations to create patterns) on the ground and the photographic transformation of the same paper through photograms (photographic images made without a camera by placing objects directly on photosensitive paper). The margins include printed information such as latitude and longitude, year, method/victim count, and the frottage points represent crime scenes of murder.
Particularly interested in serial killer murder cases, as she has mentioned in talk events, Komatsu states that her motivation for creating these works lies in her curiosity about what is behind the impulse that drives individuals to morally condemned acts. Violent deaths are also the beginnings of negative memories, and the perpetrator and victim may be positioned within a symbiotic cycle. From the minimal representation of the works, various fundamental questions seem to be derived.
