Hibiya Okuroji is a gallery-oriented art fair that defies conventional formats by bringing together galleries under the elevated passageway "Hibiya Okuroji," which is hidden in the back of Hibiya.
Named for its location at the "back" of Hibiya and Ginza, the heart of Tokyo, and the word "alley" that conveys the secret mood of the elevated passageway, Hibiya Okuroji is a 300-meter-long facility under the railroad overpass over JR East (Yamanote Line, Keihin Tohoku Line, and Tokaido Main Line) and JR Tokai (Shinkansen Line). The symbolic brick arch, built in 1910 under the guidance of German engineers and modeled after the viaduct in Berlin, is still in service and supports daily railroad operations.
The location, which is not part of any of the unique districts of Ginza, Yurakucho, Hibiya, or Shinbashi, but has the potential to become a node in each area, and its ongoing support of the daily transportation network with 113 years of history, makes it the perfect place to disseminate contemporary art.
To return to the roots of art fairs, the gallery aims to be a place that conveys the excitement of contemporary art to both core art fans and first-time visitors alike, with no barriers in sight. Gallery tours, where visitors can listen to explanations in the gallery owner's own words, will be held twice a day during the fair period.
The tours will be held during the same period as Art Fair Tokyo, and visitors will be able to walk around from the Tokyo International Forum. On the first day, March 9 (Thursday), visitors can also enjoy special offers such as cocktails and tote bags with Art Fair Tokyo tickets, etc.
