Artists

Hasui Kawase
Woodblock print artist Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) thrived from the Taisho to the Showa periods. Amidst the rapid modernization and transformation of cities and landscapes, Kawase traveled throughout Japan in search of its quintessential landscapes, depicting the seasonal scenes that reflected the everyday lives of ordinary people. Kawase was accompanied in his woodblock print endeavors by Shozaburo Watanabe, the publisher who championed the "shin-hanga" (new prints) movement, as well as by skilled carvers and printers. Together, they collaborated to uphold traditional techniques while pursuing even higher levels of craftsmanship. They experimented with new colors and expressions, earning widespread popularity as leading figures in the "shin-hanga" movement.

This exhibition showcases the rich and evocative work of Kawase, often called the "poet of travel," through a comprehensive display of his representative works from his early career to his later years. In addition to around 180 pieces, including rarely seen series, the exhibition features the locally relevant work "Yamagata Yamadera" (1941) exclusively at the Yamagata venue, inviting visitors into Hasui Kawase's lyrical world.
