Gustavo Isoe

Tsuyoshi Isoe [1954-2007], known under the name Gustavo Isoe, created and exhibited his work for over 30 years in Spain, an important stage in Western art history. Through the expression of realism, he carved out a solitary realm in the realm of painting. This exhibition will showcase a total of seven pieces, including three oil paintings, three drawings, and one print, with a focus on works returned from Spain including works being shown in Japan for the first time.

In conjunction with this exhibition, a talk show will be held featuring the artist Atsushi Suwa, who describes his relationship with Isoe during his lifetime as a "struggle." It has been 17 years since Isoe passed away at the age of 53. Reflecting on a significant portion of his career deeply rooted in the thick history of realism painting and his continual questioning of the act of "seeing," the hope is that this event will serve as an opportunity to revisit the legacy of Gustavo Isoe and recognize him as a painter who is still relevant.
