Gottingham
Photographer Gottingham is known for his procedural production methods and theatrical photographic expressions. Under his interest in frameworks and the practice of reframing, he has been exploring the autonomy and heteronomy of photography. With the decentralized operation of systems and the attention to sustainable circular societies, as services and communities decentralize, this project attempts to explore the manifestation of interrelations of objects in this diverse world while questioning the reversibility of photography in various spaces. This project, under the framework of "Open Studio," is an exhibition where photographers curate their works at The 5th Floor, using architectural drawings of the studio space by the architectural label w/. In addition to original backlit print works, the exhibition introduces Gottingham's recent research on materials and transmissive manuscripts. By manipulating the scale of space and photography, the exhibition attempts to reconstruct the studio itself using architectural models, hypothesizing that exhibition items could become openings in architecture. Furthermore, a partial release of relations (i.e., interrelations of objects) in more than 100 databases constructed by Studio Xxingham K.K. will be presented.

The venue for this project, Room 501 of The 5th Floor, is located on the floor above one of Gottingham's studios, with the same layout. In other words, during the exhibition changeover period, the floor of The 5th Floor "opens" suddenly, and the photographer's studio appears. Based on Gottingham's personal experience of previously planning and operating open studios for resident artists in the local artist residency, this project creates an opportunity to consider "Open Studios" in curatorial spaces.

Lastly, this project was launched with another goal: to support The 5th Floor, the venue. Collaborating with other groups occupying Hanazono Alley, where The 5th Floor and Gottingham's studio are located, related events such as open studios of architectural design firms will also be held simultaneously. A portion of the income from admission fees and other sources will be used to support The 5th Floor's crowdfunding efforts.
