Goro Goro Maru Maru Cats

Anjo City Museum of History
Finished
Dogs and cats are well-known as close companions of humans. However, cats seem to dominate the representation in art and literature. With their capricious, complex, irrational nature, and sometimes exceedingly affectionate disposition, these beautiful creatures have always captivated people, both now and in the past.

In Japan, cats were favored in the imperial court, as seen in "The Tale of Genji," and in the early modern period, they became a popular subject in brush paintings and ukiyo-e prints. Ukiyo-e artist Kuniyoshi Utagawa, known for his love of cats, always had cats around him.

This exhibition focuses on cat ukiyo-e prints and introduces the ecology of cats and the relationship between humans and cats. Why not discover the profound charm of cats beyond just their cuteness?
