Giant Robots - The Core of Japanese Mecha Anime

The Museum of Kyoto
Finished
This exhibition traces the history of design and visual representation of giant robots in Japanese animation, questioning "What are giant robots?".

Animated series featuring fictional robots, known as "robot anime", has become a significant part of Japanese popular culture. Fictional "life-size" robots, such as the "Moving Gundam" in Yokohama (which ended its public display at the end of March this year), exist in major cities across Japan, becoming a familiar sight in daily life.

Starting with "Tetsujin 28-go" (1963) as a pioneer of robot anime, followed by the huge success of "Mazinger Z" (1972), and the groundbreaking impact of "Mobile Suit Gundam" (1979), which injected new life into the genre, numerous robot anime have been produced to this day, featuring captivating robot designs. The evolution and expansion of these designs, unique to Japanese animation and unlike those seen in other countries' animations, have fascinated fans. These designs have been meticulously crafted with creative ingenuity in settings and designs to lend visual "realism" to the fantastical and imaginative world of robots.

This exhibition will examine the history of robot design and visual representation in robot anime, focusing on the pivotal roles played by the conceptual "mechanisms" and "size" in shaping their "realism". Through this exploration, the hope is to engage the audience in contemplating together "What are giant robots?"
